Kendrick Lamar And Dave Free Set To Produce Untitled Comedy For Paramount; Trey Parker To Direct

L to R: Kendrick Lamar, Dave Free

Kendrick Lamar and his creative partner Dave Free along with South Park co-creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone are set to produce a new live-action comedy for Paramount. The project was initially announced in January 2022, with Emmy-winning South Park scribe Vernon Chatman writing the script. At the time, there was no director attached to the project, but sources now confirm that Parker will direct the film himself.

The untitled Paramount feature, which will be pgLang’s first project, finds the past and present coming to a head when a young Black man who is interning as a slave reenactor at a living history museum discovers that his white girlfriend’s ancestors once owned his. Parker and Stone are producing under their Park County banner, while Lamar and Free will produce via pgLang, which launched in 2020 as a record label, production, and publishing house.

Paramount Pictures CEO/President Brian Robbins called the producing team “creative visionaries” and boasted that the project would be “a powerful storytelling experience.” The studio will handle theatrical distribution, home entertainment, and television licensing rights, with the film also set to stream on Paramount+.

Parker and Stone have a long history of successful collaborations, having created South Park, Team America: World Police, and BASEketball, among others. They are also the co-creators of the Tony-winning Broadway musical Book of Mormon alongside Robert Lopez. Meanwhile, Lamar has won 13 Grammy Awards and was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Music in 2018 for his album Damn.

It remains unclear when production will start on the project, which was initially scheduled to begin shooting in the spring of 2022 but was postponed due to Parker’s commitments to South Park. However, with Parker now confirmed to direct, fans of the South Park duo can look forward to another exciting project from these talented creators.
