Michaela Coel And Anne Hathaway Take The Lead In The A24 Pop Music Epic ‘Mother Mary;’ Penned By David Lowery

A24 is teaming up with David Lowery, the director of ‘The Green Knight,’ for their next film,' ‘Mother Mary,’ starring Anne Hathaway and Michaela Coel. The film is an epic pop melodrama that follows a fictional musician (Hathaway) and her relationship with an iconic fashion designer (Coel). Lowery, Toby Halbrooks, and James M. Johnston will produce alongside Jeanie Igoe of Homebird Productions and Jonas Katzenstein, Maximilian Leo, and Jonathan Saubach of augenschein Filmproduktion.

The film will feature original songs written and produced by Jack Antonoff and Charli XCX, with an original score composed by Daniel Hart. This marks the third collaboration between A24 and Lowery, following The Green Knight and A Ghost Story. A24 will handle the global release of the film, which will be shot in Germany and funded by Film- und Medienstiftung NRW and the DFFF.

Hathaway is having a busy 2023, having recently premiered her film Eileen at Sundance Film Festival. She will also star in Neon's Mother’s Instinct, alongside Jessica Chastain, and Amazon's The Idea of You. Coel, who made history as the first Black woman to win an Emmy for Outstanding Writing for a Limited or Anthology series with her show I May Destroy You, recently starred in Marvel’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and will appear in the Mr. and Mrs. Smith series on Amazon with co-creator, executive producer, and co-star Donald Glover.

Lowery, who most recently directed Peter Pan & Wendy for Disney+, starring Jude Law, Alan Tudyk, Molly Parker, and Yara Shahidi, is represented by Entertainment 360 and WME. Hathaway is represented by CAA and Entertainment 360, while Coel is represented by UTA and Maison. With an all-star cast and a talented production team, Mother Mary promises to be an exciting addition to A24's roster of critically acclaimed films.
