Lizzo To Play Rosetta Tharpe In Amazon MGM Studios’ Forthcoming Film, ‘Rosetta’

Amazon MGM Studios is set to release a film about the legendary singer, songwriter, and guitarist Rosetta Tharpe. Grammy and Emmy Award-winning artist Lizzo will play the musical icon in this highly anticipated project. Lizzo is also producing the film alongside Kevin Beisler, Nina Yang Bongiovi, and Forest Whitaker, with Natalie Chaidez and Kwynn Perry writing the screenplay.

Rosetta Tharpe, born Rosie Etta Atkins and known as “the original soul sister,” rose to prominence in the 1930s and 1940s. She is celebrated as one of the first gospel singers to cross over into R&B and rock and roll, bridging the gap between spiritual and secular soundscapes. Tharpe’s unique style and guitar playing later contributed to the rise of electric blues and had a major influence on the British blues movement of the 1960s. She is also recognized for influencing early rock and roll artists, including Little Richard, Chuck Berry, Tina Turner, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis, Eric Clapton, and Elvis Presley.
