KJ Smith Black and Skyh Black Launch Blackhouse Media With Debut Feature Directed By Okema T. Moore
KJ Smith Black, best known for leading Sistas for nine seasons, is stepping into a new role alongside her husband, All the Queen’s Men star Skyh Black. The couple has launched their production banner, Blackhouse Media, and completed filming on their first project, a psychological thriller centered on maternal mental health.
Smith Black stars in the feature, directed by 2025 ABFF Award winner Okema T. Moore. Described as a tense, character-driven story, the film examines themes of trust, obsession, and the blurred line between perception and reality, all framed through the pressures of motherhood.
For the producers, the story carries added weight. Citing CDC data that shows Black women are over three times more likely to die from pregnancy-related complications, the couple emphasized the film’s urgency and cultural resonance.
“This was both a challenge and a thrill,” Smith Black shared. “Okema’s vision brought depth and authenticity, and as a new mother myself, telling this story felt vital.” Skyh Black added, “Launching Blackhouse Media with KJ in front of the camera and Okema behind it felt like the perfect alignment.”
Moore echoed the sentiment, calling the project both creatively rewarding and personally affirming as a Black female director.
The untitled thriller is the first in Blackhouse Media’s planned slate of elevated films and prestige television projects. Casting updates and post-production news will be revealed in the coming months.
