Cynthia Erivo Enters Partnership With Universal Pictures Through First-Look Deal

Universal Pictures has signed a first-look deal with Edith’s Daughter, the production company founded by Cynthia Erivo. This partnership deepens the relationship between the award-winning actress and the studio, following her starring role as Elphaba in Wicked, which is projected to make a massive global opening of $175 million.

Universal Pictures President Peter Cramer praised Erivo’s storytelling prowess, stating, “Cynthia’s world-class talent is matched by her commitment to authenticity, representation, and empathy. We’re honored to amplify her mission through this collaboration.”

Erivo, who founded Edith’s Daughter in 2020, shared her excitement about the partnership. “Working with Universal on Wicked has shown me their dedication to fearless storytelling. This deal is not just a milestone for Edith’s Daughter but also a celebration of diverse voices in film. I’m thrilled to bring our stories to life.”

Edith’s Daughter focuses on uplifting underrepresented narratives. Its first film, Drift, premiered at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival and received positive reviews. Current projects include a remake of The Rose for Searchlight Pictures and a film about 19th-century Nigerian princess Sarah Forbes Bonetta. On the TV side, the company is developing Raising Wild with Apple, alongside Renee Zellweger and Toluca Pictures.

Erivo’s extensive accolades include an Oscar nomination for her role in Harriet, a Tony Award for The Color Purple, and an Emmy nomination for her portrayal of Aretha Franklin in Genius. She will return in Wicked Part Two, slated for release on November 21, 2025.

With this deal, Erivo’s mission to champion diverse and meaningful stories takes another significant step forward.
