Rapman Wins NAACP Image Award For Outstanding Directing In ‘Supacell’
Congratulations to Rapman, creator and director of the hit Netflix series ‘Supacell,’ on winning the 2025 NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Directing in a Drama Series! Since season one’s debut in June 2024, the series has taken the world by storm with its captivating storytelling and supernatural performances, quickly becoming a fan favorite and earning widespread acclaim. The hit TV series, starring Tosin Cole, Adelayo Adedayo, Nadine Mills, Josh Tedeku, Eric Kofi Abrefa, Calvin Demba, and Ghetts, explores the effects of sickle cell disease on the Black community, and reimagines the disease to be one that defies reality and empowers Black people with strength, immortality, agility, and transtemporal abilities.
In a 2024 interview, Rapman, whose real name is Andrew Onwubolu MBE, told the cast he began writing the show during the 2020 protests following the murder of George Floyd. He says, “I wanted to do something to uplift Black people.” After learning more about sickle cell disease, he reflected, “Yeah, you live with it, and it can hurt you, but [what if] it means your children would be extraordinary…” From there, the concept for ‘Supacell’ was born, offering a powerful reimagining of a superhero narrative that centers Black experiences while blending social commentary with supernatural storytelling for a series that is both thrilling and deeply meaningful.
