Rap Sh!t Cancelled By Max After Two Seasons
Max, the streaming platform, has decided not to proceed with a third season of Issa Rae's comedy series "Rap Sh!t." This announcement comes a month after the conclusion of the show's second season on the streaming service.
Originally scheduled for an August 10 debut, the second season of "Rap Sh!t" was delayed to November due to strikes by the Writers Guild of America (WGA) and Screen Actors Guild‐American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA). The intention was to provide a better opportunity for the creative team and cast to promote the series.
Max, like other streaming services, has been streamlining its lineup of original content. The cancellation of "Rap Sh!t" means that there are now five returning comedy series on the platform, including "Hacks," "And Just Like That…," "The Sex Lives of College Girls," "Peacemaker," and the recently renewed "Bookie."
A spokesperson for Max expressed gratitude to Issa Rae for creating "Rap Sh!t," describing it as a unique comedy with compelling social commentary that resonated with viewers. The statement also thanked Issa Rae, showrunner Syreeta Singleton, and the teams at Hoorae and 3 Arts Entertainment for their contributions to the series.
"Rap Sh!t" follows the story of two estranged high school friends from Miami, Shawna (Aida Osman) and Mia (KaMillion), who reunite to form a rap group. As they ascend to fame, Shawna and Mia face a crucial moment in their rap career, where they must decide whether to stay true to themselves or conform to the demands of the music industry.
The cast of the series includes Jonica Booth as Chastity, RJ Cyler as Lamont, and Daniel Augustin as Maurice. Issa Rae, the creator of the show, served as an executive producer for Hoorae, with showrunner Syreeta Singleton, Dave Becky, and Jonathan Berry executive producing for 3 Arts Entertainment, and Jim Kleverweis.
Co-executive producers Yung Miami and JT of City Girls, along with Kevin “Coach K” Lee and Pierre “P” Thomas for Quality Control Films, and Sara Rastogi and Jax Clark for Hoorae Rae’s Audio Everywhere Company, Raedio, were also part of the production team handling music supervision for the series. Despite its cancellation, "Rap Sh!t" has left an indelible mark on viewers, with memorable moments like "Seduce and Scheme" remaining in their hearts.
