Natasha Rothwell's 'How to Die Alone' Cancelled By Hulu And Onyx Collective After One Season

Hulu has canceled the comedy series How to Die Alone after just one season. Created by and starring Natasha Rothwell, the show premiered in September 2024 under Disney's Onyx Collective, a brand dedicated to amplifying voices from underrepresented communities.

Rothwell expressed her disappointment in a statement, saying she was "shocked, heartbroken, and baffled" by the decision. Despite strong critical acclaim, including a 91% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and an Independent Spirit Award for Best Ensemble Cast in a New Scripted Series, sources suggest low viewership influenced the cancellation. The show also holds three pending NAACP Image Award nominations.

Determined to keep the series alive, Rothwell plans to shop it to other platforms, emphasizing the importance of diverse storytelling: "Representation isn’t just about visibility—it’s about ensuring our stories aren’t erased."

How to Die Alone follows Mel, a Black JFK Airport employee navigating life after a near-death experience prompts her to take bold risks. The cast includes Conrad Ricamora, Jocko Sims, and KeiLyn Durrel Jones, with Rothwell serving as an executive producer alongside Vera Santamaria, Desiree Akhavan, and Jude Weng.

Rothwell, known for her Emmy-nominated role in HBO’s The White Lotus and her work on Insecure and Saturday Night Live, remains committed to bringing How to Die Alone back to screens.
