‘Luther: Never Too Much’ Documentary Coming To Theaters November 1

The ethereal Soul and R&B music of Luther Vandross has serenaded fans for decades. His velvety smooth voice carried sweet melodies that caressed the ears and tender hearts of listeners, serving as a universal soundtrack for lovers all over the world. From singing background vocals in the 1970s for some of the world’s biggest artists, to his breakout solo career in 1981 and beyond, Vandross’ legacy has been etched in our hearts and within the realm of transcendent musical soundscapes. The new documentary, ‘Luther: Never Too Much,’ directed by critically acclaimed and award-winning Dawn Porter, continues this legacy with a celebration of the once-in-a-lifetime artist and proves that we can never get too much of Luther Vandross’ discography.

The trailer for the documentary provides a closer look at the life and musical genius of Luther Vandross. ‘Luther: Never Too Much’ delves into the late artist’s organic love for music, his vision for creativity, and his collaboration with musical icons like Roberta Flack, David Bowie, Aretha Franklin, and more. The documentary explores Vandross’ monumental achievements in the music industry including his platinum selling albums, his Grammy wins, and his captivating live performances. The film showcases Vandross’ story with rarely-seen archival footage and narrative collaboration with some of his close friends from the music industry.

However, ‘Luther: Never Too Much’ also uncovers the less joyous and overwhelming moments that he faced in the shadows of the industry and in his personal life. Also included within the documentary are Vandross’ experiences with racism from music executives, the life-altering car crash he experienced, his health and the public scrutiny of his body, and his longing for love. As the trailer reports through a quote from Vandross, he expressed that he felt “like a trick has been played on me. God has given me everything I asked for, except one person who loves me.” The documentary offers the space for Vandross’ beautiful and complex story to be told candidly and with care.

The film features contributions and appearances from special guests, including Mariah Carey, Dionne Warwick, Jamie Foxx, and more.

‘Luther: Never Too Much’ is presented by Giant Pictures and CNN Films. The documentary will hit theaters in select cities on November 1st with preview screenings beginning October 30th. Additionally, the documentary will premiere on CNN, OWN, and Max in 2025.
