Lee Sung Jin Steps Into The MCU As New Screenwriter For Marvel Pic ‘Thunderbolts’

Lee Sung Jin, the screenwriter of the upcoming Netflix dark comedy Beef, has been confirmed to take over as the screenwriter for Marvel Studios' Thunderbolts, which is set to be released on July 26, 2024, marking the end of Phase 5 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The film is expected to follow a group of villains on missions commissioned by the government and is said to be the MCU's version of Suicide Squad. Specific details of the plot have yet to be revealed.

Lee Sung Jin will be reuniting with Beef helmer Jake Schreier, who will direct the film, and Steven Yeun, who will make his debut in the MCU in an undisclosed role. Yeun also stars in Beef alongside Ali Wong, where the two strangers become determined to ruin each other's lives after a road rage altercation.

The Thunderbolts cast will include Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, Sebastian Stan as Winter Soldier, David Harbour as Red Guardian, Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, Wyatt Russell as US Agent, Hannah John-Kamen as Ghost, Olga Kurylenko as Taskmaster, and Ayo Edebiri from The Bear in an undisclosed role. Kevin Feige, the president of Marvel Studios, will produce the film.

Lee Sung Jin is an Emmy and two-time WGA Award nominee known for his work on several popular TV series, including Dave, Tuca & Bertie, Girlboss, The Real O’Neals, Silicon Valley, 2 Broke Girls, and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. He has also co-executive produced most of these series and Prime Video's rotoscoped series, Undone.
