Freeform’s popular show Grown-ish is set to air its final season this year, with the sixth season being the last. The season will air in two parts, with the first half premiering in the summer of 2023 and the second half, or Season 6B, set to air in 2024. Fans can expect some big guest stars, including Lil Yachty, Anderson .Paak, and The Free Nationals.

The decision to end the series was not influenced by the recent regime change at Freeform, which saw Simran Sethi take charge of the network, including her ABC duties. Sethi had previously shepherded Grown-ish during her time as SVP, Scripted Development from 2015-17. Reports state that the decision to end the show was a creative one.

Grown-ish is a spinoff of ABC’s Black-ish and premiered in 2018. The show follows Yara Shahidi’s character, Zoey, as she leaves home for college. Season 5 saw Marcus Scribner take on the lead role as Zoey’s younger brother Junior, who started his first year at Cal U. The show focuses on Junior’s attempts to step out of his sister’s shadow and make his mark on the campus.

Creator and executive producer Kenya Barris said, “We’ve spent nearly a decade telling our stories through the -ish series and to say it has been an amazing journey would be an understatement. To be able to watch Yara, Marcus, and our entire grown-ish family grow up in front of (and in many ways alongside) us over these past several years has been both a joy and an honor.”

The show has helped to launch the careers of actors Trevor Jackson, Diggy Simmons, and Daniella Perkins. The show is produced by ABC Signature, with Barris, Craig Doyle, Shahidi, Anthony Anderson, Laurence Fishburne, Helen Sugland, E. Brian Dobbins, and Michael Petok serving as executive producers. Doyle will serve as the showrunner for the sixth season, succeeding Zakiyyah Alexander and Courtney Lilly, who were co-showrunners in the previous season.

As the show comes to an end, fans can look forward to an exciting final season, with new guest stars and the celebration of the show’s 100th episode. Grown-ish will surely be missed, but fans can always go back and relive the memories made over the past six seasons.
