CBS's ‘The Equalizer’ Teases Potential Spinoff Series With Exciting New Characters

CBS’s hit drama The Equalizer, starring Queen Latifah, is gearing up to expand its universe with a potential spinoff. Episode 516 of the current season will introduce two intriguing new characters who may lead their own series, according to sources.

The new characters include a younger female martial artist and criminologist with a mysterious backstory and an older male ex-CIA operative. While it’s unclear if the latter has ties to Queen Latifah’s Robyn McCall from her CIA days, both roles are designed as guest appearances with the potential to become series regulars.

Unlike the original 1985 series and the recent CBS reboot, which both focus on a single lead, this spinoff could feature a dynamic two-lead format. This marks a departure from the traditional structure of The Equalizer and even the Denzel Washington-led films.

CBS has adopted a subtle strategy for spinoff launches, integrating potential new characters into main episodes rather than producing formal backdoor pilots. For example, Fire Country introduced Morena Baccarin in a guest role before building a series around her. Similarly, Tracy Morgan’s guest arc on The Neighborhood inspired the Paramount+ spinoff Clutch.

The Equalizer continues to thrive as one of CBS’s top-rated shows since its 2021 debut, securing its place as a Sunday night favorite. The current season stars Queen Latifah as Robyn McCall, a former CIA operative who uses her skills to help those in need. The ensemble cast includes Tory Kittles, Adam Goldberg, Liza Lapira, Laya DeLeon Hayes, and Lorraine Toussaint.

Produced by Universal Television in association with CBS Studios, The Equalizer is helmed by executive producers Joseph C. Wilson, Queen Latifah, Debra Martin Chase, and others.

With its history of success and a loyal audience, The Equalizer could soon join CBS’s growing roster of multi-series franchises like NCIS and FBI. Keep an eye out for Episode 516 this spring to catch a glimpse of the future.
