Shea Serrano Inks Overall Television Deal With Amazon Studios For His Comedy Series ‘Primo’

Shea Serrano

Shea Serrano, the renowned bestselling author, screenwriter, and podcaster, has expanded his partnership with Amazon Studios ahead of the release of his upcoming comedy series Primo on Amazon Freevee. Under the deal, Serrano has signed an overall television agreement with Amazon Studios, and a first-look podcast agreement with Wondery, an Amazon subsidiary.

Serrano is the creator and executive producer of Primo, a single-camera comedy series inspired by his childhood in San Antonio. The show revolves around a teenager juggling societal expectations, college aspirations, and a hectic home life with his single mother and five uncles. Amazon Studios and Universal Television, a division of Universal Studio Group, are producing the series, which debuts on May 9 on Freevee.

As part of the podcast agreement, Serrano will develop and produce original ongoing and limited podcast series that will showcase his unique blend of sports and pop culture for Wondery. Previously, Serrano hosted No Skips with Jinx and Shea, a rap album podcast for Spotify and The Ringer.

“We’re delighted to expand our relationship with Shea beyond his outstanding work on Primo,” said Vernon Sanders, head of television for Amazon and MGM Studios. “Given Shea’s already proven track record as a journalist and author, we’re excited to see the original content he produces across Amazon Studios and Wondery.”

Serrano has written four New York Times bestsellers, two of which topped the charts. Two of his books have been turned into documentary series for Hulu and AMC, respectively. Additionally, Serrano developed the comedy series Neon for Netflix and will premiere his first feature, Miguel Wants to Fight, on Hulu later this year.

“Working on Primo has been an incredibly fulfilling and positive experience for me,” said Serrano. “I’m thrilled that Amazon has given me the opportunity to collaborate with talented people I admire and create cool things. I feel like The Rock in Furious 7, bursting with so much energy that I could flex the cast right off my broken arm.”

Marshall Lewy, Wondery's Chief Content Officer, added, “Shea is a triple, quadruple, maybe even quintuple threat, and we can’t wait for fans to hear him bring his singular perspective on sports and culture every week. We love working closely with talent across multiple touchpoints within Amazon, as we’re doing with Shea.”

Serrano is represented by CAA.
