Nikyatu Jusu is diving into The Fly universe with her latest project, a new body horror film for 20th Century Studios and Chernin Entertainment. Inspired by David Cronenberg's 1986 classic, The Fly, Jusu will both write and direct this fresh take, although details about the plot remain under wraps. Insiders reveal that her version will expand on the original world rather than being a direct remake.

This project comes at a time when body horror is resurging, with recent successes like Coralie Fargeat's The Substance stirring global interest and even Oscars buzz. Cronenberg’s The Fly redefined horror and sci-fi in the '80s, with Jeff Goldblum’s portrayal of Seth Brundle, a scientist transformed into a fly after a teleportation experiment goes wrong. The film was celebrated for its disturbing yet fascinating portrayal of physical and psychological metamorphosis, enhanced by Chris Walas' award-winning practical effects.

Jusu's acclaim in the genre world has been growing since her psychological horror Nanny won the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance in 2022. The story of an undocumented Senegalese nanny in New York, Nanny captivated audiences and was quickly acquired by Amazon and Blumhouse. Alongside The Fly, Jusu is also working on a horror film for Universal and Monkeypaw Productions inspired by her short film Suicide by Sunlight, which explores Black vampires immune to the sun through their melanin. Additionally, she's slated to direct a Night of the Living Dead sequel for MGM.
