Netflix Set To Give Modern Take On Jane Austen With ‘Pride,’ From Higher Ground And Alloy; Karen Joseph Adcock As Writer

Netflix is developing Pride, an upcoming movie based on Ibi Zoboi’s 2018 young adult novel. The modern retelling of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice is being produced by the Obamas' Higher Ground and Alloy Entertainment, with Karen Joseph Adcock (The Bear) adapting the screenplay.

Set in Brooklyn's rapidly gentrifying Bushwick neighborhood, Pride follows Afro-Latina teen Zuri Benitez as she navigates family dynamics and fights to preserve her community. Her world is shaken when the wealthy Darcy family moves in next door. Despite initial disdain for Darius Darcy, Zuri begins to see him in a new light, challenging her views on pride, prejudice, and home.

Alloy previously worked on a TV adaptation of Pride for HBO, and Netflix has just announced another Pride and Prejudice series, written by Dolly Alderton.

Higher Ground has seen success with films like American Factory and Leave The World Behind, while Alloy has produced several hit Netflix films, including You Are SO Not Coming to My Bat Mitzvah and Purple Hearts.

Karen Joseph Adcock, known for her work on The Bear and Yellowjackets, brings her writing talents to the project. Ibi Zoboi, a Haitian-American author, is also celebrated for her works American Street and Punching the Air.

This adaptation promises a fresh and timely look at a literary classic through a contemporary lens.
