Luther Vandross Documentary, ‘Luther: Never Too Much,’ To Debut On CNN New Year’s Day
Mark your calendars! CNN is set to debut Luther: Never Too Much, a powerful documentary about the legendary Luther Vandross, on January 1 at 8 p.m. ET. Directed by Dawn Porter, the film explores Vandross' journey from his early days in Harlem and performances at the Apollo Theater to his rise as a master of love ballads.
Featuring Vandross’ own voice through archival footage and interviews with icons like Mariah Carey, Dionne Warwick, Valerie Simpson, and Roberta Flack, the documentary offers a heartfelt glimpse into his life and legacy. Vandross, who passed away in 2005, left an indelible mark on the music world, celebrated in this one-of-a-kind production.
Dawn Porter reflected on the project, sharing, “We combed through hundreds of hours of interviews, concert footage, and images to create this portrait.” CNN continues its New Year’s tradition of showcasing music documentaries, following past features on Dionne Warwick, Carole King, and Linda Ronstadt.
The documentary premiered at Sundance Film Festival last year and saw a theatrical release this fall via Giant Pictures. For those who miss the CNN premiere, Luther: Never Too Much will air on Max and OWN in 2025. Additionally, Vandross’ rendition of Michelle by The Beatles is now streaming and will be part of the upcoming Never Too Much: Greatest Hits album, releasing December 13.
The project brings together an impressive production team, including Trish D Chetty and Ged Doherty for Raindog Films, Jamie Foxx and Datari Turner for Foxxhole Productions, and Leah Smith for Trilogy Films. Sony Music Vision serves as the distributor, with executive producers from Sony Pictures Television Nonfiction, Sony Music Entertainment, and Sony Music Publishing.
