Denzel Washington’s ‘The Equalizer 3’ Set To Open With An Estimated $30 Million+ At The Box Office

Sony's highly anticipated action sequel, The Equalizer 3, starring Denzel Washington, is projected to have a strong opening weekend, with estimates placing it at over $30 million, and some sources even suggesting a potential $40 million start.

The film's appeal among men over 25 and solid numbers with women over 25 contribute to its promising prospects. However, it's important to consider that the franchise's audience is gradually getting older, impacting their cinema attendance.

The Labor Day weekend presents a favorable scenario for The Equalizer 3 as there are no other wide releases, and there won't be a National Cinema Day like last year. Another Sony film, Gran Turismo, is set to open on August 25 after holding previews the previous week.

The first installment of The Equalizer, released in September 2014, raked in $34.1 million in its opening weekend and achieved a domestic gross of $101.5 million. The sequel, which hit theaters in July 2018, debuted with $36 million and concluded its U.S./Canada run with $102 million.

Notably, The Equalizer franchise stands out as the only film series in Denzel Washington's illustrious 40-year acting career.

The screenplay for The Equalizer 3 was penned by Richard Wenk, drawing inspiration from the 1980s TV series created by Michael Sloan and Richard Lindheim. The movie follows Robert McCall, Washington's character, as he assumes the role of protector for his friends in Southern Italy who find themselves under the control of local crime bosses. As tensions escalate, McCall confronts the mafia head-on in order to ensure their safety.
