Denzel Washington Teases Upcoming Projects Including Role In Next Black Panther And Plans For Retirement
Denzel Washington, a two-time Oscar winner, has hinted that his role in the next Black Panther film is among several high-profile projects shaping his carefully planned career trajectory.
While promoting Gladiator II on Australia’s Today Show, Washington discussed his mindset about choosing roles at this stage in his career. When asked if he felt any pressure joining Ridley Scott’s epic sequel, the 69-year-old actor dismissed the notion, emphasizing his focus on working with the best filmmakers.
“For me, it’s about the filmmaker, especially at this point in my career,” Washington explained. “I’m only interested in working with the best. I don’t know how many more films I’m gonna make—probably not that many. I wanna do things I haven’t done.”
Washington outlined an ambitious lineup of upcoming projects, including revisiting Othello, collaborating with director Steve McQueen, and taking on Hannibal. Notably, he revealed that Ryan Coogler is writing a part for him in the next Black Panther installment. After completing this series of projects, Washington hinted he may retire.
“I’ve played Othello at 22. I’m about to play Othello at 70,” he said. “After that, I’m gonna do King Lear. After that, I’m gonna retire.”
Washington’s connection to Black Panther holds special significance. His financial support early in Chadwick Boseman’s acting career was instrumental in helping the late actor, who famously credited Washington for paving the way. “There would be no Black Panther without Denzel Washington,” Boseman once said.
As for Gladiator II, co-starring Pedro Pascal and Joseph Quinn, it’s set to hit theaters on November 22. Washington remains as sharp as ever, ready to add more legendary roles to his storied career before stepping away from the spotlight.
