Colman Domingo On Being A Playwright, Co-Writing His New Play ‘Lights Out’ With Patricia McGregor; Premiering In New York April 30
Colman Domingo is returning to theater as actor and playwright in his brand new stage play, 'Light's Out,' about a deciding moment in Nat "King" Cole's career which he co-wrote with writer/director, Patricia McGregor. The cast includes actors Dule Hill and Daniel J. Watts among others.
Despite being the voice that built Capitol Records, Nat “King” Cole’s groundbreaking television show was rejected by Madison Avenue, unwilling to sponsor America’s first black television host. Now, on the night of his final broadcast, Nat must grapple with the complexities of his psyche, personified by his best friend and alter-ego, Sammy Davis Jr., and decide whether to quietly step out of the spotlight or go out with a bang.
Colman took to IG to say this:
"Been so very good to be in the room as playwright again. @lightsoutplay will be our third production. We have taken our time to make sure the time was right to come into New York, its home, @nytw79 is just perfect. @patriciamcgregor at the helm and the best co writer/director that a guy could ask for. Steering this ship is the breathtakingly awesome @dulehill and the equally thrilling @dwattswords . The rest of the cast is mind blowing. I think you may want to book your tickets now. We broke records at @peopleslight and the @geffenplayhouse . I am so proud of this work. It reflects the times. A tiny grenade wrapped in a sheet cake. 🎂 💣✨"
Lights Out (@lightsoutplay) Performances begin April 30th and runs until June 15th at New York Theatre Workshop.
